Now that we all have been bitten by the travel bug from planning our travel jewelry in yesterday's post, it’s time for the next challenge!
One struggle that I have faced as I have packed for a getaway is not knowing how to transport my favorite jewelry, especially when it comes to my Real Orchid pieces. I’ve tried a lot of strategies with varied success, including using a wooden jewelry box! While that kept my treasures safe, it also wasted precious real estate in my luggage!
There are tons of tips and tricks on the web on how to pack your jewelry for travel, but if you are like me, you want to look and feel as chic as possible, so using plastic straws and empty pill bottles to store jewelry is not your vibe. Luckily, I’ve found a few solutions that look and feel bougie, that have worked for me and can work for you as well!
As you set off for your much-needed (and long-awaited) summer vacation, here are some tips and tricks on how to pack your special pieces of jewelry in order to keep them safe and secure in your luggage, whether that is a checked bag or a carry-on.
Once you have selected what you will bring, it’s time to actually pack them, but If you need some help choosing what to bring, head over to my previous blog post to find out more about my process for planning my jewelry looks!
To start packing, you’ll need the right tools for the job, and in this case, that means a jewelry roll! A good quality jewelry roll is completely indispensable when it comes to packing your jewelry for your vacation. Jewelry rolls are an ingenious solution because they can accommodate a fair amount of jewelry while keeping it safe, untangled and undamaged, and all of this in a cute and compact package.
It's important that your roll be constructed out of soft, non-abrasive material, such as velvet or suede, and measure at least 21” long when opened. If you have time (and patience) to wait, I suggest ordering an Italian Velvet and Suede roll (like these on Etsy - Italian Velvet Jewelry Roll); it will be worth it once you’ve packed like the bougie jetsetter that you are! But, if you are in a pinch, you can find a decent jewelry roll on Amazon (like this one that I used) for under $25, and we can’t ignore Prime’s quick shipping. The Amazon version is also quite a bit larger, which can come in handy!
If you are packing Devi & Co. Real Orchid pieces, you’ll also need a rigid box in order to protect the gorgeous blossom. Unlike your other jewelry, your orchid pieces cannot bear any weight, so a sturdy box that will not get smashed in your luggage is 100% necessary! The box that your Devi and Co. arrived in will do just the trick, so if you saved that, now is the time to dig it out! Otherwise, another deep jewelry gift box will work, or even a small plastic “Tupperware” container will do. I know it’s not as glamorous as an Italian velvet and leather jewelry roll, but for this circumstance, we have to go with function over form so that our preserved orchid arrives intact.
Packing your jewelry into your roll for travel is very self explanatory. It is designed to button in your necklaces one side (you can even put a few per loop if they are slim-lined). The loops can also be used to secure bracelets. Next to the necklace section, you will find a few rows of hole-punched fabric strips; these are for your earrings! Simply poke the ear wires through the small holes and secure them with earring stoppers. The next section in my jewelry roll is made for rings, but since I always wear the same rings, I used this section for hoop earrings and packing more bracelets. Once the roll is packed, fold the end flap inward followed by the bottom and top flaps. Now you’re ready to roll! Start from the left side and roll firmly until you have formed a cylinder. Then you’re done! Please note that your Orchid jewelry should NOT be packed in the roll!
Finally: how should you pack your delicate Real Orchid jewelry to keep it safe while traveling?
If you are lucky enough to have saved your original Devi & Co. box from shopping with me, then you are in luck, because it is the easiest solution to keep your treasures secure. If not, you can opt for another small and sturdy box that is at least 2” deep to accommodate your flower blossom. Regardless of which type of box you use, you must also pad the orchid to protect it from moving around inside the box. Tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a silk scarf all work perfectly here!
In the demo video, I wrapped my preserved orchids in bubble wrap and then in tissue paper. When you wrap the blossom separately from the gemstone beads, especially on Devi & Co statement necklaces, you are ensuring the life of your beautiful jewelry because you are preventing the delicate flower and the hard stones from colliding with one another in transit. Wrapping the flower and then the beads and placing them in a sturdy container is the only way to prevent any damage from occurring.
